Dattatreya is a collective incarnation of the holy trinity - Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva. Three heads and six hands correspond to the Trimurti (trinity). He is depicted as holding symbolic items related to Trimurti - rosary and kamandal (Brahma), conch and chakra (Vishnu), trident and damru (Shiva). He is shown along with four dogs which represent four holy scriptures - Vedas - and cow as mother earth.
