Indra, the King of the Devas (Demi-Gods), grew jealous and fearful that King Sagar might become too powerful and take over Heaven (Swarga).

  • To create an obstacle, Indra stole the Ashwamedha Yagna horse, which was used in King Sagar’s horse sacrifice ritual, a ceremony that demonstrated a king’s supreme power.
  • Indra hid the horse near the hermitage of Sage Kapila, who was deeply engaged in meditation in the jungle.
  • This act set off a chain of events leading to King Sagar’s 60,000 sons disturbing Sage Kapila, who, in anger, burned them to ashes, setting the stage for Ganga’s descent to Earth.
