King Sagar’s Sons’ Souls Wander: After King Sagar’s 60,000 sons were reduced to ashes due to the curse of Sage Kapil, their souls were unable to attain peace and kept wandering on Earth, unable to reach liberation. The curse rendered them unable to move on to the afterlife.
-
Anshuman’s Apology to Sage Kapil: Anshuman, the grandson of King Sagar, took responsibility for the sin of his ancestors. Feeling guilty for the actions of his forefathers, Anshuman sincerely apologized to Sage Kapil for the wrongdoing of King Sagar's sons, hoping to bring an end to their wandering souls.
-
Sage Kapil’s Instruction: Sage Kapil, having heard Anshuman's heartfelt apology, told him that the souls of Sagar’s sons could only be liberated if Goddess Ganga was brought down to Earth. Ganga’s holy waters had the divine power to purify the souls and grant them the peace they deserved.
-
Penance to Bring Ganga: Anshuman, deeply committed to his ancestors’ salvation, begins a severe penance to please Lord Brahma and request the descent of Goddess Ganga to Earth. His sacrifice and devotion aimed to fulfill the task of bringing Ganga's purifying waters down to the mortal realm.
-
Anshuman’s Legacy: Though Anshuman succeeded in his penance and earned Lord Brahma's approval, it was Anshuman’s son, Bhagirath, who ultimately succeeded in bringing Ganga to Earth. Bhagirath’s additional penance and determination were required to ensure that Ganga’s descent would be controlled and that the souls of Sagar’s sons would be liberated, completing the divine mission.
