Nanda, Krishna’s foster father, observed a fast on Ekadashi, the eleventh day after the full moon. He went to bathe in the Yamuna River the following morning, but he went too early, during the inauspicious time, also known as the demonic time in astrology.

  • Because of this, the servants of Varuna, the god of oceans, captured Nanda and took him to Varuna’s realm.
  • When Krishna learned about this, he set out to rescue his father and went to Varuna’s abode.
  • Upon seeing Krishna, Varuna realized that he was the incarnation of Vishnu, the Supreme God, and immediately apologized for his actions.
  • Varuna, recognizing Krishna's divine nature, released Nanda from captivity, and Krishna returned him safely to Gokul.
