Granthi refers to the knotted areas in the subtle body that block the flow of prana (life energy) through the Sushumna nadi, the central psychic channel. These knots prevent the energy from rising, hindering a Yogi's progress toward spiritual enlightenment and liberation.
- There are three main Granthis: Brahma Granthi, Vishnu Granthi, and Rudra Granthi. Each knot is located at a specific point in the subtle body, obstructing the rise of prana and keeping a person bound to material desires.
- Rudra Granthi is the third knot, located between the Ajna (third eye) chakra and Sahasrara (crown) chakra. This knot creates the feeling of being loved and results in the desire for affection and validation from others.
- The Rudra Granthi fosters the illusion of the "I"—a sense of personal identity—which acts as a barrier to transcending worldly emotions and achieving liberation (moksha).
- Yoga practices help in untying the Granthis, allowing the practitioner to transcend the feelings of illusion (Maya) and attachment, ultimately leading to the experience of spiritual freedom.
