King Sagar's Grandson, Anshuman: After the tragic event involving King Sagar and his 60,000 sons, Anshuman, his grandson, takes it upon himself to perform a penance to bring Goddess Ganga down to Earth. This was crucial to redeem the souls of his ancestors, who had perished in the curse of Sage Kapila.
-
Penance to Please Lord Brahma: Anshuman, along with several generations of his family, undertakes severe penance and devotion to Lord Brahma, the creator of the universe. His goal is to appease Brahma and seek permission for Goddess Ganga to descend from the heavens to purify and redeem the souls of his ancestors.
-
The Descent of Ganga: According to the legend, Lord Brahma is pleased with the penance of Anshuman and grants his wish, allowing Goddess Ganga to descend to the Earth. However, because her power and force are so immense, it is believed that her descent must be controlled to prevent destruction on Earth.
-
The Role of Bhagirath: Although Anshuman was successful in pleasing Lord Brahma, it was Anshuman's great-grandson, Bhagirath, who eventually brings Ganga to Earth. Bhagirath performs his own intense penance to ensure that the mighty river can flow gently to Earth, fulfilling his ancestor’s wishes.
-
The Purification of the Ancestors: After Goddess Ganga’s descent, she flows down to Earth, where she is able to wash away the ashes of King Sagar’s sons, thereby granting them salvation. This event also symbolizes the divine power of Ganga and her role in purifying sins and blessing the Earth with her life-giving waters.
