Tara is a form of Hindu Goddess Shakti, one of the ten Mahavidyas (Wisdom Goddesses). Her name means "the one who guides and protects", offering ultimate knowledge to lead humans toward salvation. She is also known as Bhav-Tarini (the one who helps cross the ocean of material existence) and Bhaya-Harini (the remover of fear).
- Tara is the Shakti of Shiva, who took the poison emerged from the Samudra Manthan (ocean churning) and kept it inside Shiva's throat to protect the cosmos.
- The Tara Yantra is contained within a Bhupur (a square with four T-shaped doors) that provides access to its divine energy.
-
Inside the Bhupur, there are eight lotus petals, representing the eight elements of the world:
-Space, air, fire, water, earth, mind, intellect, and ego. - The Bhupur is green, symbolizing balance, a combination of hot yellow and cold blue, reflecting the balance required to cross the ocean of material existence. Inside the circle of petals, an upward-pointing red triangle represents the hot, male energy of Shiva.
