Vamana is the dwarf priest incarnation of Vishnu, who took this form to restore cosmic balance by reclaiming the universe from the demon-king Bali.
- King Bali, a righteous but ambitious Asura king, gained control over all three worlds through his devotion and power.
- Vamana, appearing as a small Brahmin, approached Bali and requested three strides of land as a boon.
- Once granted, Vamana expanded into a gigantic form—in his first stride, he covered the earth to heaven, and in his second stride, he covered the earth to the netherworld, reclaiming the entire universe.
- Realizing there was no place left for the third step, King Bali humbly offered his own head, upon which Vamana placed his foot, sending Bali to the netherworld (Sutala) but blessing him with immortality and guardianship of the underworld.
